Assassin’s Creed Movie Gets Official Release Date

Today, Fox announced through The Hollywood Reporter that Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender finally has a release date. We’ll finally see the assassin’s on the big screen on December 21 of 2016, just a week after the next Star Wars movie comes out. It will be directed by Justin Kurzel.

The description on IMDb for the film reads:

"A bartender is captured by a large corporation and is forced into a machine, named “The Animus”, allowing him to relive the memories of his ancestors — Most of whom are Assassins — to retrieve powerful and dangerous artifacts."

Based on this, it is speculated that Fassbender will be playing Desmond Miles, though he could also be whichever assassin the movie intends to follow (come on, Ezio!). Fassbender stated in August that the movie will “respect the game” but will also include its own unique elements. No other details have been revealed yet.

It will be interesting to see the direction the movie takes, and whether it can help Ubisoft pick itself up from its clumsy handling of recent releases. However, given that the release date isn’t until the end of 2016, likely Ubisoft will have given us much more to talk about (good or bad) by then.
