While I am not one to usually pass over each and every classic game coming to digital marketplaces as part of updated back catalogs, I am more than willing to share when some of the greats get their day in the sun once again. That day is today for Game Boy Advance title Fire Emblem, which makes its way to the Wii U virtual console eShop today. It is priced at $7.99, and is also available on the Nintendo website.

Because it was the first title in the series to be published in North America, for many, it was the first Fire Emblem game they got to experience. It certainly was not only the case for myself, but also was one of my first experiences with a tactical RPG title. The series-standard threat of permanent death continues to be an outstanding game design choice, when properly respected by players who don’t “save scum” to avoid the consequences. Fire Emblem also marked my first realization that RPG games didn’t need to stay purely on consoles, opening up my perspective beyond traditional Nintendo properties on their handheld devices.

If you have the opportunity, pick up Fire Emblem on the Wii U virtual console whenever you can. Lyn is such an underrated protagonist in the grand scheme of the series, while Eliwood and Hector are no pushovers, either.
