When it comes to Geoff Keighley-presented awards shows, the expectation is a fair number of world premieres for upcoming video games. Usually the surprise is half the fun, so it’s both a shame and an enticement to hear from the man himself that he will be teaming up with Konami game director Hideo Kojima to premiere Metal Gear Online.

As is the case with previous Metal Gear Solid games, Metal Gear Online looks to be the stealth-based online combat multiplayer component to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Whether it will act as both a bonus addition and a standalone piece of content like with Metal Gear Solid 4 is yet to be seen, but hopefully it will be explained during The Game Awards 2014.

This isn’t the first time Hideo Kojima and Geoff Keighley have teamed up to promote and reveal Metal Gear Solid content. A notable reveal occurred with “Moby Dick Studios” revealing “The Phantom Pain” as a new gaming property at the VGA’s back in 2012. Although people discovered the secret that it was Metal Gear Solid V mere dozens of minutes after the reveal (you can never slip a gaming secret past 4chan, who received the first glimpse of Bloodborne earlier this year), it was nonetheless exciting times. Perhaps we’ll learn more about the Phantom Pain itself when we see our first glimpse of Metal Gear Online on December 5th.
