With several gaming organization taking part in Extra Life charity gaming marathons over this past weekend, Extra Life has been raising quite a bit of funds. In fact, according to the organization’s Facebook account, the number raised in this campaign is up to $5.4 million, with more donations on the way. You can still donate up to December 31st.

If you’re unaware about the organization, Extra Life was founded in 2008 with the goal of raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Participants raising money would go through the mentally-straining task of marathoning video games for 24 straight hours, usually livestreaming their gameplay on Twitch or other streaming networks.

One of the more fascinating things that’s come out of the past half decade, when it comes to video games, is seeing just how the community can come together to accomplish great goals. Whether it be gamers, streamers, let’s players or speedrunning enthusiasts like those at Speed Demos Archive doing Games Done Quick charity drives, the collective is proving that greatness can come from playing video games. Hopefully, as time goes on and these kinds of charitable acts become more apparent in mainstream non-gaming media, more eyes and dollars can be pointed towards the direction of Extra Life and others.
