Halo Master Chief Collection Requires 20 GB Day 1 Patch
If you’re a fan of downloading essentially half the data limit of a Blu-Ray disc on top of your game purchase on Day 1 of a game release, well you’re in luck. The Halo Master Chief Collection will feature a 20 GB content update, according to the Xbox Wire. This is because 45 GB of the game’s Blu-Ray disc is already used up, with the 20 GB going towards added features and multiplayer content.

With 4 full games being ported over to the Xbox One, including a button-flip mode that turns the graphics of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary back and forth between updated and original visuals, that’s a lot of data. It would make a whole lot more sense to just ship 2 Blu-Ray discs together for the Halo Master Chief Collection, than have thousands of people download 20 GB of data from Microsoft’s servers all at the same time.
There’s also the issue with download speeds. A 20 GB update may be the single-biggest console patch in the history of consoles, and those who have a slow download rate from their internet providers are going to be downloading important features for a long time. Hiding roughly 30% of a game’s content back behind a download requirement is incredibly shortsighted, while appearing to be a cost-cutting measure to avoid having to insert another disc in the package. I mean, 4 games ported to the Xbox One for $59.99 MSRP is an excellent deal, no matter how you look at it. It’s just unfortunate that a physical release will take a great toll on bandwidth limits and capabilities on the digital side, too.
There is a way around having to download the Halo Master Chief Collection content patch on Day 1, however it does mean having to pre-order the game.
That’s from the Twitter account of the Executive Producer at 343 Industries, explaining the situation. If you plan on picking up the Halo Master Chief Collection exclusively for Xbox One when it comes out on November 11th, it seems like it’s the best/only way to aid the download process of the Day 1 content patch.
