The first wave of Amiibo figures is due out November 21st, coinciding with the release of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. This wave will have 12 figures which have already been available for pre-order and you can see the list of those here. The second wave will hit sometime in December and will include Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon.
Amiibo figures will already be compatible with a couple of titles right out of the gate. Smash Bros is an obvious one, as compatibility with the figures has been heavily touted as a key feature for that title. Functionality will also be patched into Mario Kart 8, though whether that will be patched in by the time the Amiibo figures are out is not clear. Amiibo figures will also work with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 & Yoshi’s Wooly World when those games come out.
Of course there’s still a big question of what exactly these Amiibo figures contribute to the games, and it could be a fine line that’s very easy to cross. Too little content makes them trivial, while too much might feel like badly gated dlc. Hopefully Nintendo is able to find a balance and make them worthwhile. Though admittedly if nothing else, the Amiibo figures look pretty cool and would be at home in any collection.
