Kickstarter Games Getting Less Than Half The Funding They Did in 2013

facebooktwitterreddit

Is the Kickstater bubble bursting? Signs point to yes as games trying to get funded through the crowd-funding website are on track to make less than half what they did last year.

More from News

To be fair, 2013 was a record-breaking year for Kickstarter projects with lots of games from high profile developers such a Tim Schafer getting Broken Age funded through the project (though it still needed additional funding to get finished) and Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man, so a downturn in overall funding is not a huge surprise, but less than half is a pretty drastic drop. 2014 in Kickstater news has been more highlighted by high profile failures such as Yogventures. Additionally, only 3 Kickstarter projects this year have managed to raise over $500,000, while 21 games did the same or better last year.

While funding may be way down from last year, Kickstarter projects are still on track to make over $27 million by the end of the year, which seems to indicate there’s plenty of people willing to invest in small projects that really seem worthwhile and could not otherwise get made, it’s just unlikely that you can throw virtually anything up on Kickstarter and get loads more money than you could possibly need. Unless it’s for a potato salad…
