After a long day of game reveals, we end E3 2014 Day 1 with the first Super Smash Bros Invitational tournament. It was an awesome couple of hours that saw several new stages, items and characters in play for the very first time on stage. Game director Masahiro Sakurai was on hand to wish all competitors good luck, and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime handed out the trophies to the winners.

More from News

Our first set of Finals featured Zero Suit Samus, Olimar, Kirby and infamous match turtler Wii Fit Trainer. Facing off in the Little Mac boxing arena, the Grand Finals ended up going between Kirby and Zero Suit Samus on Battlefield. 8 minutes, 4 stock, no items; a legit tournament final. Going down to the final minute, ending with only one stock between them, ZeRo as Zero Suit Samus wins the tournament in a Sudden Death finale.

In addition to the regular tournament, Fan Favorites were picked by the crowd at the end of each match, making sure to have their hype measured. Fox and Mega Man ended up being in the finals, proving that projectile, long range characters will ultimately prevail for the fans. Fox ended up coming out on top, because of course Fox wins yet another tournament.

There was also some side tournaments going on in the Super Smash Bros Invitational, as well. The Media Rumble ran between journalists from North America and Europe, with the Famitsu editor winning the match by playing Greninja. We did also get to see a “Celebrity Match”, which featured Keegan Allen, Zelda Williams, Stephen Lunsford and Erin Sanders. Keegan ultimately came out on top, absolutely blasting the field as Bowser.
