7. “Blackbar”

Every now and then I get frustrated by a subset of gamers I like to call “graphics snobs.” They’re the people who insist that games need to be played on the best possible hardware that run them and at the maximum resolution and frame rate, feeling like everything else is unworthy in some way.

Those folks wouldn’t like “Blackbar,” since it had… well, no graphics at all, really. In fact this text-based exercise challenged the notion of what we call a game in this day and age, seeing as it was entirely presented as black words on a blank white screen.

Too pretentious and avant garde for some? Certainly, but with its powerful message about censorship and the way it challenged players’ thoughts on writing, it was a favorite among reviewers who actually considered it a game.
