9. “The Cave”

Lucasarts may have gone the way of the dodo in 2013, but darn it, we still had Ron Gilbert. He and the Double Fine team hooked mobile gamers up with “The Cave,” a puzzle platformer with a sense of humor and some point-and-click adventure genes in its DNA.

Oh, and the titular cave is actually the narrator, which is pretty awesome. Other games on this list may have done more creative things with genres or mechanics, but there’s something to be said for style points in game design, and “The Cave” earned a lot of them.
