Framerate For The Evil Within Locked At 30fps On PC

For those hoping to grab The Evil Within on a high-end PC in order to unlock a much stronger graphical output, you may be a bit disappointed. A community representative from publisher Bethesda took to the game’s forums to reveal the PC requirements for the survival horror game from famed horror game director Shinji Mikami. The biggest revelation: The Evil Within is officially locked at 30fps on all platforms, including PC. Debug commands will become available, but any such changes “are not recommended or supported.”

Furthermore, there are some further oddities that come with the PC version of The Evil Within. For one, the developers have focused their development on the 8 GB of unified RAM that comes with a PS4 and Xbox One, and that the PC version will look to work identically like consoles. Because of that, the PC “recommended” specs demand a 4GB VRAM graphics card. Without it, you can’t play the game at 1080p. You can also remove the letterboxing on the PC version, however gameplay elements require use of the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, meaning it’s not supported by the developers, either.

While some would argue that gameplay is more important a discussion point than graphics, when it comes to multiplatform titles underperforming on specific platforms it is a worthy of discussing how disappointing it is. When gameplay is the same on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, yet certain platforms can’t produce a better visual output because of letdowns in technical design, it opens up conversations on things like the state of games development on the PC. The fact that people who have dropped more than $1,000 on their computer can’t play a game in 1080p in the year 2014 because they didn’t go with the 4 GB graphics card option will understandably make people upset.

Until we get some hands-on looks from professional tech reviewers (such as Digital Foundry), we can’t be exactly sure how the PC version will perform in its variety of different graphics modes for The Evil Within. If you’re not one to tinker around with such technical alterations, perhaps you may want to look into getting a PS4 or Xbox One version when the game comes out on October 14th. It’s also making an appearance on the PS3 and Xbox 360, too. Below are the PC requirements for the game:

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 7/8 (64 bit)
  • GPU: GTX 460 or an equivalent 1gb VRAM card
  • CPU: i7 or an equivalent 4+ core processor
