The executives of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare just announced live on the Xbox Twitch channel the existence of a Day Zero Edition of the game. That’s right, for what may be a first in gaming retail history, a Call of Duty game will become available early if you manage to put your money down for a full purchase in advance.

In addition to getting the game early, Advanced Warfare: Day Zero Edition will give players double XP in multiplayer all day and 2 custom weapons in addition to whatever other pre-order bonus your retailer provides. It will be available on all platforms that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is released on, and will not be a side exclusive that Xbox platforms usually manage to get out of Activision.

It’s an interesting approach to pre-order content, and I’m not quite sure how to take it in right now. On the one hand, it will be a limited quantity offer that will likely be sold out nationwide before launch, and is quite the offer to Call of Duty players that jump editions of the game immediately once they are released.

On the the other hand, Advanced Warfare is likely going to bring in more than a billion dollars in sales, and Activision are very likely going to produce a large quantity of software units due to their expectations. When there’s a lack of scarcity in a very popular series, the further perpetuation of pre-order culture may set a very dangerous precedent with retailers and publishing companies.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be released on November 4 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. If you get the Day Zero Edition, it will become available when you pick the game up at stores a day early. Consult your retailer to learn the earliest you can pick it up, if you’re interested.
