Blizzard Entertainment has reached the end of an era today, as Chief Creative Officer Rob Pardo has announced that he has left the company. Polygon notes that he leaves behind 17 years worth of experience as a creative influence within the company, especially as one of the lead designers for popular MMORPG World of Warcraft.

“After 17 years at Blizzard, with long and careful contemplation, I have made a difficult and bittersweet but ultimately exciting decision to pursue the next chapter in my life and career,” Mr. Pardo explains in a Blizzard forum post.

"The Blizzard community is ultimately the reason why we come to work every day and pour our souls into every world and experience we create. Blizzard’s players are the most passionate in the world and your commitment and dedication are truly awesome to behold. Creating entertainment for you has been an incredible opportunity, and I know that you will continue to grow and become even stronger as a community over the years to come. It has been so meaningful on a personal level to help create joy for all of you."

It’s a shame to see Rob Pardo leave Blizzard. He’s help to design some of the most influential games of my young gaming life, including Diablo II and StarCraft. It will be interesting to see where he ends up, whether it be at another company or creating a studio of his own. There’s also the possibility that he could join the Oculus Rift team to create content for the platform, although I only say that because seemingly everyone is leaving their job to work for the virtual reality wing of Facebook these days.
