Football Snap? 2K's latest football title is card-battler NFL Playmakers
By Brian Allen
2K Games is back in the NFL, but not in the way you probably anticipated. The NFL's exclusive deal with EA Sports covers simulations, so arcade style titles or in this card battlers, are fair game. NFL 2K Playmakers is from the team at Cat Daddy Games, the creators of WWE Supercard.
With the NFL season right around the corner, Playmakers is announcing a new mode, Gamechangers. It uses real-time NFL stats and rewards players for correctly predicting game and player statistical outcomes. San Francisco 49'ers star Deebo Samuel is the definition of a gamechanger, so he and Bay Area rap icon E-40 have teamed up in a trailer to promote the game:
For the Sept. 5 NFL kickoff, players will receive a special in-game pack with a Gold Deebo Samuel card. The NFL is journeying to Brazil this year on Sept. 6. Yes, that is a Friday. The NFL will be on every night of the week at this rate, but I digress. To celebrate the historic game in Brazil, players can earn unique Brazil-themed cards by completing in-game activities.
Other modes in NFL 2K Playmakers include Red Zone Drive Mode and Seasons Mode. In Red Zone Drive, players call strategic plays en route to getting touchdowns and then stopping their opponent in the red zone. Seasons allows players to build their dream team and compete for the NFL's most coveted prize, a Super Bowl.
Mobile games are a huge industry, and WWE Supercard has been a success story for Cat Daddy Games and 2K. There's no reason for them not to see if they can replicate it here. And for what it's worth, 2K and Madden are competing again, as EA has its own Madden NFL Mobile.
There's space for a game to play in between the seemingly endless ad breaks in the NFL games that are about to start.
