According to the man who originally reported that backwards compatibility is coming to the PlayStation 4,the tech being used to make this possible is currently coming back with mixed results.
Ahsan “Thuway” Rasheed is reporting that while some games look incredible, others are coming back looking like a choppy and buggy mess. He also states that disc-based backwards compatibility is possible on the PS4, but that he doesn’t know what Sony’s current plans for the feature are.
Oh and for those asking about any update about the PS2/PS1 emulation for PS4. I don't know what Sony's plans are concerning disc playback.

What I have heard is the emulation experience ranges from absolutely amazing 1080p to terribly buggy single FPS garbage.

Sony doesn't want to ship a half baked product with people complaining about inaccurate features.

Oh and they are listening for your feedback for the firmware and OS side of things. Please be vocal.

I am legitimately telling you the PS2 emulation is real, if you want local disc playback, make noise. They've made a reputation by listening

Mike’s Musings: If these rumors are indeed true, I hope for Sony’s sake that it takes all the time it needs to get this feature right. This has the potential, if fully functional, to be an incredible feature for the PS4.
