EA Games Has 10 Year Star Wars Deal, No Tie-In Games Planned

For those intrigued by just how long EA Games plans on making Star Wars games for in the future, wonder no more. In a presentation at Tuesday’s USB Global Technology Conference, EA C.F.O. Blake Jorgensen revealed that his company’s deal with Disney to create Star Wars games is currently slated to last 10 years. As well, he later said that EA Games does not plan on producing any games to tie-in with the stories of the upcoming Star Wars movies.

"The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it’s so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that’s very focused on the world that’s been created around Star Wars."

Additionally, Jorgensen said that they plan on using DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare to develop their upcoming Star Wars video games.

We already know that DICE is planning on creating a new Battlefront game, as well as BioWare’s history creating the Knights of the Old Republic series (and its lesser-appreciated MMO game “The Old Republic”), in addition to a wealth of classic and contemporary RPG games. It is the Visceral Games branch that is most puzzling.

The Redwood City studio is most famous for its Dead Space series, as well as the Godfather games and one of my favorite movie tie-in games; “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” They have created several Teen and Mature-rated games in the past. Perhaps if Star Wars 1313 were to be revived, Visceral Games would be the studio to perform the resurrection?

Either way, 10 years is a long time for one publisher to maintain licences to a series’ video games. Seeing how Star Wars entries have been in terms of quality as of late, I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Hopefully an excellent Battlefront game will bring balance to the force.
