3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

While GTA: Vice City was not the first title in the series to explore an era of the past, the story of Tommy Vercetti perfected the look and feel of 1986 Miami in a satirical way. Rockstar really stepped their game up in the voice acting department by hiring a deep cast that included Ray Liotta, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Luis Guzman, Danny Trejo, Lee Majors, William Fichtner and Garey Busey, among others.

What makes this a Top 3 GTA game for me was the way it expanded upon the gameplay of GTA III in such a short turnaround (it came out one year later). Adding purchasable properties complete with missions required to unlock stead cash flow moved beyond getting money strictly through story missions. You could play the game the way you wanted to, up until you needed to unlock new areas of Vice City. It never hurt that it was a true to life parody of Scarface, one of my favorite all-time movies.

When you bring it all together, Vice City provided a fully enjoyable experience that brought a different style to the Grand Theft Auto universe that truly separated itself from its predecessors.
