Best Action Adventure Game – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Winner of multiple Game of the Year awards across multiple gaming outlets, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves created a truly cinematic experience for this remarkable game. The opening (depicted above) with Drake waking up on a derailed train hanging over the edge of a cliff threw you right in the middle of the action, teaching you how to jump around in the game’s platforming system and created one of the more memorable openings in video game history.

Not only did this game serve as a shining example of a third-person action adventure story, but it also created some thought-provoking puzzles throughout. It also combined the ideology of optional stealth, as sneaking around and taking out the guards quietly will give Drake fewer enemies to deal with.

The way Uncharted 2: Among Thieves handled the camera direction and dialogue helped to bridge the gap between storytelling of video games and movies. Running away from an oncoming truck chasing after you put you into the action and made you experience the anxiety of a close call. The cutscenes, while arguably campy, reflect the cheesy nature of some of the better Hollywood blockbusters. Everything about this game was done to perfection and help to continue Naughty Dog’s streak of impressive games.

Honorable mentions: God of War III, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Red Dead Redemption
