Earlier this morning, as told in an announcement in the Microsoft News Center, Steve Ballmer is set to retire as CEO of the company within 12 months.

"There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time. We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction."

A sea of change has been coming to Microsoft. Earlier this year Microsoft saw gaming executive Don Mattrick leave his post at the company to join Zynga as CEO, with the company being restructured and allowing Julie Larson-Green take over of a new gaming and hardware division. However, it is shocking to see the ever-eccentric Mr. Ballmer retire after being with the company so long.

In fact, Steve Ballmer has been with Microsoft since 1980. It will be intriguing to see who comes in to replace him as CEO of Microsoft, as whoever it is will be under the microscope that is the financial business industry.

For now, let us say a fond farewell by walking down memory lane. Below is a highlight package of all of the best Steve Ballmer moments. I’m going to miss the guy, for sure.
