NPD November 2013: PS4 Is The Early US Next Gen Winner

facebooktwitterreddit

UPDATE: Nintendo has commented on their findings from the NPD for the month.

"Pokémon X and Pokémon Y each sold more than 225,000 combined digital and physical units in their second month on the market…The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the sixth Nintendo 3DS title to have a Metacritic score of 90 or higher, sold more than 280,000 combined digital and physical units…Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, currently the highest-rated next-generation title with a Metacritic score of 94, sold more than 215,000 combined digital and physical units in its first eight days on the market."

Furthermore, they saw a ~340% increase of Nintendo Wii U sales from October. Seeing that the Wii U sold roughly 50.5k units in the US that month, we can gather roughly 220,000 Wii U’s were sold in the US in November. Considering the PS4 and the Xbox One has sold more than 909k units each and the Xbox 360 sold 647k units, it is a very disappointing number for Nintendo.

ORIGINAL: Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores within the United States, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information. They are published from the NPD group.

This month’s Top 10 most sold software titles in the US:

  1. Call of Duty: Ghosts
  2. Battlefield 4
  3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  4. Madden NFL 25
  5. Grand Theft Auto V
  6. NBA 2K14
  7. Skylanders: Swap Force
  8. Just Dance 2014
  9. Disney Infinity
  10. FIFA 14

Last month’s predictions:

1. Call of Duty: Ghosts
2. Battlefield 4
3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
4. NBA 2K14
5. Super Mario 3D World

Additionally, the Xbox One sold through 909,132 units in the United States and 647k Xbox 360 units were sold in the entirety of North America for the month of November. Meanwhile Sony has stated that, based on the NPD data, the PS4 was the top selling next-gen platform for both hardware and software. Additionally, they were the #1 home console sold in the US during the past month. While the PS4 numbers are exactly stated, they managed to sell 1 million units in 2 countries within 24 hours.

What is truly fascinating is that neither The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds or Super Mario 3D World came in the Top 10 this month. Both games have been received universal appraise, yet the critical acclaim has not resulted in financial success. It’s not a good sign for Nintendo that not one Nintendo 3DS or Wii U exclusive made it into the Top 10 this month, especially right before the holidays.

Regardless, it is a great time for the video game industry. Overall gaming retail sales are up 7% from last year, and while software sales are down (expected with expensive console purchases that have limited libraries) there are excellent titles ready in the pipeline for early 2014 and beyond. PS4 and Xbox One are finally here to round out the 8th generation. Let’s play some video games!

Predictions for December 2013:

  1. Call of Duty: Ghosts
  2. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  3. Battlefield 4
  4. Grand Theft Auto V
  5. NBA 2K14
