The reason I do not like horror games where you must hide from the “Big Bad” is because I’m a scaredy cat babby man. Because of that, it took forever for me to get through Outlast, an unsettling jump scare horror game where Miles Upshur investigates the mishandling of psychiatric patients at Mount Massive Asylum in Lake County, Colorado.

Most of the gameplay involves hiding from assailants, navigating through the dark with a camcorder’s night vision, vaulting to escape monstrous enemies and not peeing your pants. The adventurous aspect of the game involves learning the unfolding of the story of the patients taking control of the hospital, piecing together a supernatural mystery that befits a gripping horror narrative. It’s hard to say much more without going into spoiler territory, but if you want to be spooked on a creepy and intense level, Outlast is right for you.
