Sledgehammer Games’ first title as a lead developer may have fundamentally changed what it means to play a Call of Duty game. Its campaign and multiplayer modes rely heavily on ultra-technological advances in militarized warfare and brings a more gamey feel towards a series renown for its serious (but explosive) approach to narrative.

A great deal of effort went into the story mode, with top-notch performances by Hollywood A-lister Kevin Spacey and Voice Acting A-lister Troy Baker. Concerning gameplay in both single and multiplayer, the addition of exoskeletons brings a whole new sense of verticality to the game, with the option to add a double jump. This maneuver, alongside a faster sprint and sliding mechanics, makes Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare play as a new standard for gameplay going forward. At the least, Black Ops III seems to be carrying its new traditions.
