Stand by for Titanfall.
So much of the lead-up to next-gen gameplay came in the form of Titanfall. It brought a level of verticality, massiveness, and open-endedness to the FPS that shaped the future for giants of its genre. The fast-paced parkour elements have now been copied by games like those in the Call of Duty franchise. The shift to focus solely on multiplayer play was a daring move that others are beginning to toy with. Giant mechs as power ups became something that outgrew a novelty. Hell, they even gave away its season pass and DLC content away for free, eventually!
Gameplay is balanced between soldiers and Titans. You speed up the cooldown for getting your Titan armor by killing enemies or taking over objectives as quickly as possible. The open maps host tight corridors and walking around space for mechs. Depending on your equipment, you can fend well for yourself on foot alone, and can take down Titans with an employed strategy. Depending on the Titan you use, you can go ballistic-heavy or agile and quick. Sparring between foes of differing sizes brings an asynchronous feel to a team-based FPS, and helped solidify Titanfall as the it-game of the early 8th-gen consoles.
