Best Xbox One Games List – #11 Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
Developer: From Software
Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
Xbox One Release Date: April 1, 2015
Dark Souls II does things a little bit differently from what the original provided, but the core tenets of the style of game permeated through. Punishing combat mechanics required you to be patient and strike while the iron is hot, instead of rush through intricately designed levels. The only way to get a semblance of the true story is to jot down the subtle statements and oddities from NPC interaction, as well as read the descriptions of items. The original Dark Souls II had minor issues with the placements of enemies, often positioned in earnest to create more difficulty than to build a formed universe.
Scholar of the First Sin builds upon what Dark Souls II laid as a foundation and reworked the elements of gameplay. Just moving where enemies are positioned, and how many existed, changed the dynamic of survival. Even their moods changed, with some becoming less and more aggressive. For the first time on consoles, it meant getting a native 1080p/60 FPS output that the PC versions of the series enjoyed, making combat more responsive to players. Finally, players learned a deeper understanding of the world of Drangleic and the secrets that were once hidden.
While the future of the series seems to tailor towards a more fluid style of gameplay, Dark Souls II carried the torch of the series amicably.
