PS4 Release Date: December 16, 2014
Anime fighters get a bad rap in the fighting game community, but Guilty Gear Xrd does an amicable job on the PS4 of changing attitudes on this mentality. It employs a six button layout, with 4 for punch/kick/slash/heavy slash, and the other 2 for special actions that include throws, cancels and other dodge maneuvers. Burst and Tensions gauges are utilized to create space and effectively perform special moves, respectively.
While not focusing that heavily on an interactive story mode, and implementing a small roster may seem like nitpicks, Guilty Gear Xrd would have benefitted from an excellent netcode for online play. It’s been vastly improved since launch, however it becomes a problem when you don’t have friends that follow your niche-upon-niche anime fighter. Because of that, there’s a lot of wasted potential in Xrd, although in the early goings for the PS4, it’s hard to find much better of its kind.
