In the lead up to the PS4’s release, the first real example of next-gen gameplay came with Resogun. A side-scrolling, shoot-em-up title doesn’t sound like next-gen on paper; however, its beautiful manipulation of voxels within a 2.5D setting provided a visual aesthetic not truly seen in video games prior to the PS4.

A brief game, Resogun takes place across several levels based on a cylindrical plane. Ships and other forms of land and air-based combatants pour in from either side of the plane, shooting projectile lasers at your player ship. Your onboard arsenal of weaponry includes laser beams, bullets, shock waves of energy and more. Keeping the offensive going runs up your multiplier, moving the action forward instead of staying stagnant.

It takes some getting used to to enjoy thoroughly, but once you get the flow of combat down pat, Resogun is the kind of arcade shmup that can provide tons of competitive replay.
