Best PS4 Games – #24 The Evil Within
Developer: Tango Gameworks
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
PS4 Release Date: October 14, 2014
If Shinji Mikami knows how to do one thing well, it’s to aim a third-person camera behind a well-dressed protagonist holding a gun and shooting at horrific monsters in a video game. The Evil Within accomplishes this goal by focusing on Sebastian Castellanos, a detective for the Krimson City Police Department who has come upon some hard times with the loss of key figures in his life. Answering the call of a mass murder at a local hospital, everything goes off the rails as he wakes up in an alternate world, where Haunted creatures roam Krimson City at the hands of the twisted Ruvik.
The Evil Within is a more psychological, philosophical evolution of the Resident Evil 4 blueprint. Sebastian has a number of weapons at his disposal, including a crossbow that requires crafted bolts to fire numerous types of projectiles. Weapons, skills and stats can be upgraded with jars of Green Gel. Doing so is essential if you want to overcome the number of monsters and bosses that lie in wait.
What The Evil Within does to the survival horror genre that not many have attempted is true intrigue. There’s an overarching mystery surrounding the events of Krimson City, and you only ever get 60% of the story through one person’s perspective. The story add-on DLC of partner Juli Kidman’s adventures through the nightmarish landscape shifts the narrative, while not completely abolishing the story that you experience otherwise. It makes for a remarkably twisted entry that will go overlooked due to its substantial technical issues at launch.
