Best PS4 Games List – #25 Mortal Kombat X
Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive
PS4 Release Date: April 14, 2015
Mortal Kombat X is just the latest title in a decades-long fighting game series known for its literally visceral brutality. Taking place years after Shao Kahn’s ultimate demise, Shinnok and Quan Chi are back to bring havoc to the Earthrealm. Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Kenshi lead a main resistance group while Cassie Cage leads a group of legacy children fighters of past Mortal Kombat heroes. Jax’s daughter Jacqui and Kung Lao’s cousin Kung Jin joins Cassie and son of Kenshi, Takeda, in reconnaissance and field missions. Shinnok serves to be the pervasive evil that threatens the safety of the Earthrealm and beyond.
Complicated story mode aside, Mortal Kombat X revitalized the series by providing a new take on combat. Each character comes with multiple preset combat styles, allowing them to customize their methods of attack and strategy against opponents. This method allows for each of the dozens of available characters to play wholly different between each style, adding depth to a fighting game without making the combat too obtuse.
As such, players can enjoy a multitude of old and new fighters in Mortal Kombat X. The addition of heroic offspring brings prominence and nuance to the Story Mode, tons of reputability in multiplayer modes and tons of alternative costumes and hidden secrets for both. Plus, being a viable fighting game on a tournament level brings respect back to a series that squandered a great deal in recent series entries.
