It’s hard to describe exactly what Velocity 2X strives to do without breaking it down into multiple layers. It’s the sequel that carries its standard top-down 2D shoot-em-up ship shooter, but adds an entirely new element of play.

The main heroine, Kai, disembarks from the ship throughout the dozens of missions to go through 2D action sections, which plays like a quick platform runner. You have laser rifles and a short-range teleporter to traverse through areas. The goal is to rescue survivors, collect shards and score well on each mission to boost your rank for the leaderboards.

It’s a mishmash of genres coming together to provide a simple, cohesive style of cyberpunk-themed play that focuses more on gameplay than its story. It’s a handheld Vita game at heart, but perfectly transports to the DualShock 4 for PS4 owners. Best part is that it runs and feels great on either platform, outputting at a smooth 60 FPS that keeps the action responsive and fluid. Who knows, dedicated PS Plus owners might already have it on their hard drives without knowing it.
