The stereotypical imagined adventure for young boys growing up is to play cops and robbers. Either side brought a certain sense of personal exploration, one that made the creative process enjoyable. Visceral Games captured this mentality when developing Battlefield Hardline; a police vs. bank robbers large-scale, first-person shooter.

Cops utilized the most advanced types of militarized police gear, engaging with powerful assault weapons, gigantic enforcement vehicles and battle-ready armor. The robbers pull off heists by using tools, tricks, and brutish weaponry, alongside escape vehicles. It culminated in a single-player campaign played like an episodic adventure into policing the tough crimes of Miami, FL.

A great deal of malaise aimed towards Battlefield Hardline involves its release at the wrong time, months after the civil unrest in Ferguson, MO hit home just how weaponized police forces have become in American cities. It doesn’t help that the Battlefield series has yet to provide an adventurous, or even great, campaign story. Still, Hardline brought a serviceable change of pace for the Battlefield series.
