Best PS4 Games List – #39 Broken Age
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Publisher: Double Fine Productions (plus Kickstarter backers)
PS4 Release Date: April 28, 2015
Millions of dollars, multiple crowdfunding campaigns, the splitting of its game into two acts and the lengthy delays later, Broken Age finally made its full release for PS4 in April 2015. Backed with the unstoppable help of the crowdfunding community, it follows the charming adventures of teenagers Veila and Shay, each seeking an exciting life outside of their own very different, very separate worlds.
Fantastically whimsical in nature, Broken Age’s gameplay style comes very much from the pixel-hunting, point-and-click, “let’s try all items and options available in a row” mentality of its genre from the 90’s. As a game itself, it’s more imaginative and impressive in its ability to find a backing way outside of widespread acceptance of its genre decades after its prevalence. It’s more important as a fundamental breach into the world of crowdfunding games development, with its success branching and inspiring the likes of Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera to go down this similar path.
