Where Super Mario 3D Land did great, Super Mario 3D World was exceptional. Both titles embody the spirit of a side-scrolling Mario game within a 3D space, but 3D world brought forth tons of new ways for characters to traverse from point A to point B. Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach each return to their Super Mario Bros. 2 versions of themselves, each sporting a different type of advantage in travel (floating, long jumping, running quickly, balanced movement).

It’s the new items that change up gameplay. Super Bell makes characters don a cat suit, giving them super running, climbing and attack abilities. Double cherries produce clones of characters, which can multiply into quite a handful of characters. There are also quite a number of boxes to wear on your head, including some that shoot from your head at enemies. The challenge and depth of hiding and finding green stars, the social implementation of hidden Miiverse stamps, the challenge of the game’s hardest levels and the enigmatic environments in which you play make Super Mario 3D World special.
