Best Nintendo Games List – #12 Bravely Default

Developers: Silicon Studio, Square Enix

Publisher: Nintendo

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

Release Date: February 7, 2014

If it weren’t for a late game that tended to drag on, Bravely Default would be easily in the Top 10. The fact that the game debuted on this list at #13, considering that this is a turn-based, new IP RPG from Square Enix, speaks wonders about the power of this new series. The story of four heroes journeying through a steampunk world with a conflict that involves magical crystals and a job class character progression system may not seem like an original idea, but damn, did Square Enix embark on creating something new to stand on its own.

Bravely Default embarks on a lengthy journey by balancing gameplay with story. There are cutscenes, subtle hints and an overarching narrative that drives motivation and legitimate reasoning for characters’ actions. Rare is it to experience story progression without reason. The art style makes for a perfect use of the 3D mode, and the game’s music carries the grandiose feeling to it. Bravely Default wasn’t initially planned for localization, but we are certainly glad Square Enix put in the effort.
