Best Nintendo Games List – #19 Shin Megami Tensei IV

Developer: Atlus

Publisher: Atlus

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

Release Date: July 16, 2013

Before there was Persona, there was the Megami Tensei series, which evolved into its own Shin Megami Tensei style. A post-apocalyptic series, Shin Megami Tensei IV oddly removes story connections from its predecessors, focusing on the life of samurai Flynn and his companions as they hunt down a mysterious Black Samurai figure amid a myriad of demons to conquer.

It’s the eccentricities that make SMT IV work. The Press Turn system returns, granting extra turns if your team takes advantage of an enemy’s weakness. However, defeating a demon might not be the best approach. You can recruit them for your team, or even fuse two together to create a powerful entity that does your bidding. How you play the game, including your resolve and acrimony with demons, will drive the story down one of multiple paths, each worthy of the excellent narrative adventure that brings you to such a point. Shin Megami Tensei IV brings contemporary gameplay elements to a traditional RPG story, creating a masterful blend.
