The most frustrating aspect of Square Enix’s handling of the Kingdom Hearts series is the addition of canonical titles across a variety of platforms. It is truly difficult to keep in touch with the overarching story when you need a PS3, a PS4, a Nintendo 3DS, a Game Boy Advance and a Nintendo DS to follow along. It doesn’t diminish the value of Dream Drop Distance as a game, though, as it drops Sora and Riku into a variety of brand new worlds to explore.

The action-RPG gameplay elements remain the same, but the story takes us through the universes of Fantasia, The Three Musketeers, Tron Legacy, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pinocchio. Even more intriguing is how Sora and Riku experience these worlds through differing viewpoints, symbiotically working together to unlock new worlds to explore. It’s an important entry in the series, one that should be played before checking out Kingdom Hearts III.
