Who knew that all it took for the “Warriors” style of gameplay to catch on was to implement an actually interesting property with the Tecmo Koei formula? Such is the case with Hyrule Warriors, a truly divisive hack and slash adventure that puts an emphasis on nostalgia to sell a tight musou combat game. Whether you play as Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Impa or a host of other characters, your command over a sprawling battlefield (and the defeat of opposing commanders highlighted on the map) determines the fate of a mission.
There are plenty of tasks required to keep your forces leading the balance of power, including beating local bosses and breaking through obstacles. Always keep moving forward, while looting all possible treasure, is the goal of Hyrule Warriors, and it plays into a familiar gameplay style but with the added depth of known Zelda-centric combo moves. The result is a stealth means of embracing the Dynasty Warriors type of gameplay’ one that hopes to turn others onto Tecmo’s more hands-on titles.
