There is something about Mario and friends playing an arcadey version of group sports that seems to resonate with a wide variety of audiences. Mario Golf: World Tour works because of a reliable online multiplayer, one that provides a multitude of ways to play against friends and strangers in a number of competitive modes and courses. Though DLC was planned for Day 1, the ongoing content additions meant extending the legs of a very replayable casual sports game.

It launched at a perfect time, too. Despite it being the sixth golf game in the Mario series, it was the first title since the Game Boy Advance. Tournament functionality brought organized chaos to the proceedings, especially using the Castle Club story mode. It makes Mario Golf: World Tour different enough while capturing the heart of the series.
