Best Nintendo Games List – #35 New Super Mario Bros. U
Developer: Nintendo EAD
Platform: Nintendo Wii U
Release Date: November 18, 2012
A Nintendo console would not feel the same without a new Super Mario Bros. title being playable, and that’s what New Super Mario Bros. U proudly accomplished. The basic plot remains the same; Bowser kidnaps the princess while Mario, Luigi, and friends come to her rescue. This time, however, Bowser stays at Princess Peach’s castle while tossing Mario and Luigi to a distant land. They have to make it back to bring justice to the Mushroom Kingdom.
With the Wii U GamePad came innovation to the single and multiplayer experience. Tapping on the tablet screen would produce a number of effects, including stunning friend and foe alike. You could also create platforms using the GamePad, allowing for teammates to reach distant areas with ease. However, with a nefarious, troll-like friend, one could cause chaos to other players and turn gameplay into a sort of asynchronous contest against the GamePad. For that, New Super Mario Bros. U has unintentionally added a meta gameplay aspect that continues in similar titles to this day.
