For a series known for its adorable Captain Olimar commanding multicolored plants to do his bidding, to drop him from playability altogether was a bold move by Nintendo. Instead, Pikmin 3 tells the story of a new crew of characters, Alph, Brittany, and Charlie, who explore PNF-404 to cultivate and harvest food to feed the starving planet of Koppai. Gameplay still consists of directing a horde of Pikmin to do your bidding, including defeating enemies and providing means to traverse the environment.

Pikmin 3 introduced two new creatures; the gray Rock Pikmin (defeats strong barriers and access points) and pink Pikmin (attack airborne enemies, carry items in the air, open gates at higher access points). By adding up to 5 Pikmin types at once, players enjoyed a more strategic, complex handling of their crew to save the kidnapped Captain Olimar, bring back food to Koppai and save their planet from hunger. Its multiple endings also provided a fair reason for players to explore their surroundings to greater detail.
