Best Nintendo Games List – #38 Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: August 11, 2013
While it’s a shame the Paper Mario series seems to have flamed out with Sticker Star, at least pseudo-first-party studio AlphaDream have been carrying the RPG torch with the Mario & Luigi series. The latest release in North America, Dream Team, carries some of the basic tenets (badge system, 3D world mixed with 2D action, duo-based strategy), but brings a focus on using both Mario and Luigi as their own characters working as a team. It’s a crucial dynamic that allows for interesting encounters, especially considering Mario and Luigi have action buttons dedicated for each other.
Despite a familiar feeling in its turn-based, action-timing style of RPG combat, it brings its own style of storytelling and the story of the Mario Bros. working in tandem that brings an edge that you wouldn’t expect before checking it out.
