Saber Interactive's arcade football title Wild Card Football has now joined the PlayStation Plus Extra tier of games, according to the PlayStation Blog. If you have ever played NBA Playgrounds or WWE 2K Battlegrounds, you have an idea of what's in store here.

Wild Card Football is arcade action in the spirit of NFL Blitz, with the "wild cards" being unlockable powerups that give random in game effects. They range from placing force fields around ballcarriers to having aliens show up to kidnap opposing players.

The game has no NFL license but acquired individual player likenesses. Still, it's obvious that Team Mahomes is the Kansas City Chiefs and so on. Another notable acquisition in the game is former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who hasn't played in the league since 2016 after his kneeling during the national anthem became a huge controversy.

Wild Card Football has a Metacritic rating of 72, classified as mixed or average reviews. The last update I could find for the game was in March. But perhaps its inclusion as a PlayStation Plus Extra title will help it gain some new players.

I got this at launch, and played it a good amount for a couple of weeks. I can't say it held my interest though. I will jump on soon to see if a new group of players can reignite my passion for it. I badly want there to be an arcade football alternative. Madden's Superstar KO just doesn't quite do it for me. NFL Street got the mix of arcade action and football grit just perfect in my mind.
