PlayStation Network down in global outage

This is as good a reason as any to hate Mondays. Just hours after Verizon had a network outage, Sony's PlayStation Network went down for millions of users. Not the way you want to unwind after a long day at work. Or the way you'd like to start one if you write for a video game news site.

“You might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience,” Sony said via its PSN status support page.

It's a reminder that our modern systems are always online and turn varying degrees of useless when they can't connect to their networks. I think I still have my Nintendo 64 and WWF No Mercy around here somewhere.

The most famous PlayStation Network outage was in April 2011, when hackers took the PSN down for an unbelievable 23 days. Sony lost an estimated $171 milllion during that debacle, which also exposed data from 77 million Sony accounts.

Surely this one won't be that bad, right Sony? This is a huge blow for sports gamers, as both EA Sports FC and NHL 25 are now available, the hockey title in EA's customary Early Access. EA Play allows a 10-hour free trial for players to see if they would enjoy the game, which will be hard to use while the PSN servers are down.

GameSided will keep you posted on the outage, let you know when services have returned, and keep you updated on whatever compensation Sony will offer when all this is sorted out.
