Is Madden 25's atrocious defense even fixable?
By Brian Allen
Madden 25's defense is in an embarrassing state. A patch that was supposed to fix the biggest glitch in the game didn't do that at all. Games in the recent Madden Kickoff Classic routinely saw scores in the 50s. If the world's best players can't find defense, there likely isn't any.
Eleven-time Madden champion Drini listed the myriad issues on Twitter, and it's clear EA is having a hard time fixing them:
Madden 25's defense was already in a bad state. Once players discovered a glitch that gave wide receivers a speed boost, offenses were off to the races. Even the game's big defensive addition, the Switch Stick, isn't enough to bridge the gap. The Switch Stick requires practice and skill to use properly. Most of the glitches in the game just don't.
Better defenders with X-Factors in MUT may slow the offenses down, but I don't know how many players want to commit more than one million coins to have a chance at a single stop. Plus, the offenses are getting X-Factors too. It's a season-long arms race that looks as if it will spend 2024 slanted in the offense's favor.
There are rumors that the NFL is contemplating ending its exclusive deal with EA Sports. But Madden still sells incredibly well. Thanks largely to Ultimate Team, a dedicated fanbase plays it all year. In spite of its numerous issues, the NFL license keeps it among the year's bestselling games. I'm not convinced the league will upset what has been a profitable partnership under these circumstances.
We'll keep you posted whether or not EA is able to get Madden 25's defense under control.
