Shocking no one paying close attention, EA Sports College Football is now the bestselling game of 2024, surpassing the surprise hit Helldivers 2. Video game industry advisor Mat Piscatella posted the numbers to his Twitter account today.

It's worth mentioning that the game just released July 19. It took the top two spots on July's sales chart, as the second best-selling game was EA's MVP bundle pairing CFB and Madden NFL 25. Here's the full list of July's best-selling games:

1. EA Sports College Football 25

2. EA Sports MVP Bundle (CFB 25 and Madden 25)

3. Elden Ring

4. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

5. Minecraft

6. Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

7. Hogwarts Legacy

8. MLB The Show: 24

9. EA Sports FC: 24

10. Spider-Man 2

CFB 25 is not the only sports game doing big business. MLB The Show 24 and WWE 2K24 placed seventh and eighth on the year, with Madden 24 at no.12, NBA 2K24 at no.13, and EA Sports FC 24 in the 15th spot.

Sports games are the superhero movies of the game industry. They can receive sequel after sequel cranked out as fast as you can make them, and even the worst ones will outdraw the best indies of the year.

College Football 25 is sports gaming's Deadpool and Wolverine. For a long time, we weren't sure if we were ever getting it back. The legal wranglings between the NCAA and its student-athletes threw an 11-year crimp in EA's plans. But the wait has been worth it.

CFB 25 has played to rave reviews and some of its innovations have even helped revive the long stagnating Madden NFL franchise. As I have mentioned, the only way EA was ever going to stop cranking out college football games was if it was forced to.

The game's resurgence has been a win for EA Sports, content creators, and a loyal fanbase of gamers who never gave up their love for the franchise, or their hope that it would somehow return.
