Pokken Tournament gets its awaited release date, and it’s sooner than expected!
Update: Looks like the release date is for Europe, too!

So much Pokemon news this week! But who’s complaining? Today, we learned the release date for the eagerly-awaited Pokemon fighting game, Pokken Tournament, on the Wii U for North America. The title has been available for months now in arcade machines (at Dave & Buster’s in NA, specifically), but is finally seeing its Wii U release on March 18, 2016. Yup! That’s the same date as the Japanese release!
Pokken Tournament features a roster of Pokemon characters duking it out in a far cry from the turn-based battle system of the main series titles. Instead, it plays more like Super Smash Bros in a 3D arena. Pokemon fight using their signature moves from the games, and mega evolutions for devastating attacks.
The current roster of fighters includes:
- Pikachu Libre
- Machamp
- Lucario
- Gengar
- Gardevoir
- Garchomp
- Charizard
- Shadow Mewtwo
- Chandelure (….yeah.)
- Braixen
- Blaziken
- Mewtwo (a regular one)
- Pikachu (also a regular one)
- Weavile
- Sceptile
- Suicune
There are also several “support” Pokemon that function in various ways to help you or your opponent in battle, including pairs like Emolga and Fennekin, and Snivy and Lapras. You can view the full roster (plus info on the characters) at the official website. Hang out on the Home page for a minute or two–the music sounds AWESOME.
Get excited, Pokemon fans! The 20th anniversary year has only just begun!
