Super Mario RPG On Its Way To Wii U In Europe

Super Mario RPG is once again on its way to modern consoles…but only in Europe, for now.

Before Mario & Luigi, before even Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars combined the familiar platforming elements of Super Mario Bros. with a turn-based battle system similar to Final Fantasy’s. Super Mario RPG was a highly-successful SNES title that provided the inspiration for its aforementioned successors. And though we still have yet to see a direct sequel, European Wii U owners will get to relive the original adventure on Christmas Eve.

Super Mario RPG will be added to the Virtual Console on the Wii U in Europe on December 24th. This isn’t the first time it’s been revived. In 2008, it was added to the Wii Virtual Console in select regions. The game will cost €7.99. Hopefully, we’ll see a North America Virtual Console release in the near future. For now, here’s the trailer:

Though it starts with a a typical “rescue Princess Peach” plot, Super Mario RPG features an early twist that sends Mario, Bowser, Peach, and two new friends on an adventure to save the Star Road, which grants peoples’ wishes. If you’ve never tried out Super Mario RPG, it’s a very unique installment in Mario’s adventures that’s worth keeping in mind for Christmas.
