#11 – Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Developer: LucasArts, Factor 5

Publisher: LucasArts

Release Date: November 17, 1998

The first game of three in the Rogue Squadron series, this was the best Star Wars game on the N64. Nintendo was a platform for many excellent Star Wars flight games, and Rogue Squadron was no different, putting players in control of Luke Skywalker as he fought the Galactic Empire across sixteen missions.

Rogue Squadron’s flying and combat mechanics were excellent, and the ability to recreate famous missions including the tow cable sequence from the Battle Of Hoth were a particular highlight.

The game crafted an excellent feeling of immersion, thanks to its stunning audio and graphics. The game wasn’t necessarily expected to do that well at release, with producer Julian Eggebrecht commenting that it sold “about 100 times better than anybody expected,” eventually shipping over 1 million copies in the US, and going on to spawn two excellent sequels.
