26 – Pokemon Mystery Dungeon – Explorers of Sky (Nintendo DS)

Explorers of Sky is actually an enhanced version of two other compatible titles–Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. And it (combined with its parent games) may be one of the most underrated Pokemon titles ever. As a human transformed into a Pokemon, the player explores dungeons in a relatively simple roguelike format that involves battling wild Pokemon and completing jobs along with their teammates. The plot for Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky is more involved than any of the other Mystery Dungeon titles, emphasizing exploration heavily as a tool to save the future. It’s full of quirky dialogue and even a few genuinely sad moments with your Pokemon pals.

Explorers of Sky added several new locations, discoveries, items, playable Pokemon, and even dungeons to the original game, as well as new threads to the main story and backstories for some of the main characters. It greatly expanded on the prior offerings and even offered some more challenging dungeons for those who found the dungeon crawler a bit too monotonous. Though Explorers of Sky suffers from the simplicity that characterizes all of the Mystery Dungeon games, it is by far the strongest offering in the spin-off series and the one most worth playing if Pokemon and dungeon crawling appeal to you.
