40 – Pokemon Battle Revolution (Nintendo Wii)

That screenshot may be absolutely beautiful, but Pokemon Battle Revolution was a huge disappointment. The title was a failed attempt to recapture the greatness that was Pokemon Stadium and its sequels, Stadium 2 and (to a lesser extent) Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. But Battle Revolution failed on all accounts. There’s no story mode, and unless the player owned Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, there wasn’t very much to do at all. The multiplayer aspects were…okay, but they failed to bring back the excellent tournament modes and battle styles of the game’s predecessors. Finally, the rewards for doing well were largely tied to transferring Pokemon back to Diamond and Pearl. Battle Revolution acted more as a supplement to those titles rather than its own game, and it wasn’t a very useful or fun supplement at that–just a way to battle Pokemon on a console with 3D models.

Still, those models and that backdrop look really, really good.
