American League Wild Card: Houston Astros @ New York Yankees

Houston Astros

When your baseball season comes down to one game, you need your team leaders to really shine. If the Astros could pick their own AL Wild Card MVP, it would have to be Jason Castro. Not only did he go 3-3 with a HR, 2 RBI’s and a walk, but he was a double short of the cycle! The curse of pitching on short rest got to Dallas Keuchel, who gave up 4 ER over 6 innings over the course of 6 hits and 1 walk. He did strike out 5 Yankees’ batters, while Astros’ batters like Jose Altuve, George Springer and Carlos Gomez went 0-for.

New York Yankees

Neither starter was sterling in the unofficial Game 163. Masahiro Tanaka also lasted 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 ER, 1 walk and struck out just 3. The offense came through the top 5 batters, as Chase Headley, Greg Bird and others all went 0-3 with 1 strikeout each. But let’s focus on the good: Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. With Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez following closely behind, the top of the lineup produced the majority of the scoring opportunities and the scoring plays, themselves.

Final Result:

New York Yankees 5 – Houston Astros 3
